Evansville is the government seat of Vanderburgh County, Indiana. The 2010 U.S. Census reports that the population was 117,429 at the time. It is often called “Crescent Valley” or “River City” as it is seated right by the Ohio River. The city has an area of 44.622 square miles (115.57 km2). It has a humid subtropical climate. It experiences hot, humid summers and cool, mild winters. Evansville serves as the region’s economic hub as it is home to four New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) companies and three companies traded on the NASDAQ. The Census reports that, in 2016, the median household income was $36,330 with the per capita income being $21,368. The poverty level was 21.7%. The largest industries in Evansville are healthcare, finance, education, and manufacturing. It has also become the tri-state (Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana) area’s major center for the healthcare and medical sciences industries. The community does attract ample amounts of tourists due to being the residence of the state’s oldest zoo, the state’s first casino, and attractions for sports tourism. The business district and riverfront attract tens of thousands of tourists each year for its riverboat gambling, restaurants, bars, and stores. It is an admirable protector of history as the city has 13 neighborhoods that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve is the largest territory of virgin forest compared to any other city in the U.S.

The city is affected by poor water quality due to the pollution in the Ohio River from agriculture runoff, toxic chemicals, and sewage overflows. The air quality is poor as well caused by the six large coal-fueled power plants within 30 miles of the community.  These factors can be contributors to poor health, which includes mental and emotional capacities.

According to the Indiana Youth Institute in 2015, Indiana has the highest rate of teens who have considered suicide in the country and the second-highest rate of those who attempted it. The overall suicide rate for Vanderburgh County is 21.6 deaths per 100,000 people, with the rate for males being twice as high as for females, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An estimated nearly 20% of people aged 65 and above suffer from depression in the county, making it the worst quartile in the U.S. and Indiana Counties for mental illness in that demographic.
