City Concerns

The city is affected by poor water quality due to the pollution in the Ohio River from agriculture runoff, toxic chemicals, and sewage overflows. The air quality is poor as well caused by the six large coal-fueled power plants within 30 miles of the community.  These factors can be contributors to poor health, which includes mental and emotional capacities.

According to the Indiana Youth Institute in 2015, Indiana has the highest rate of teens who have considered suicide in the country and the second-highest rate of those who attempted it. The director of the Indiana Suicide Prevention Coalition reported that the state has many challenges to accessible, affordable care for youth in need of mental health services. The other deterrent for all people with mental health issues in Indiana is the stigma as it is in most parts of the country. The overall suicide rate for Vanderburgh County is 21.6 deaths per 100,000 people, with the rate for males being twice as high as for females, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An estimated nearly 20% of people aged 65 and above suffer from depression in the county, making it the worst quartile in the U.S. and Indiana Counties for mental illness in that demographic. The reports of mental illness are at 4.2% in the county compared to 3.7% in the state. One in four people in the city of Evansville suffers from depression.

List your symptoms, how long and how often you experience them, and any other concerns that you may have. This will make your initial call easier in expressing what your needs are and being sure that they will be met promptly. In addition to this list, consider what qualities in a therapist would be best for you. Do you prefer a specific gender? Is there a particular specialty that is important to you? By considering these factors first, you will be able to narrow down your choices sooner. Many therapists will consult with you complimentarily before committing to one provider.
