Guide to Finding Mental Health Professionals in Lincoln, Nebraska
The capital of Nebraska, Lincoln has received many accolades for a city its size of more than 284,000 people. Known for its economy, the area was ranked number 1 by NerdWallet as the “Best Place to Seek Employment” in the United State and Forbes for “America’s Best Cities for New Jobs” in recent years. State government along with Goodyear, Ameritas Life Insurance and the University of Nebraska are some of the largest employers with small businesses in printing, and pharmaceutical manufacturing as job opportunities. Additionally, the city is ranked first for the “Most Content City” by 24/7 Wallstreet and 7th for “Best Cities to Make New Friends” by AARP. Considered one of the best in urban living amongst a rural area, Lincoln is a modern city with Midwestern roots.
An active-living city, Lincoln has 130 miles of walking and bike trails for residents and visitors to enjoy. City attractions include Sunken Gardens, Pioneer Park Nature Center, International Quilt Study Center & Museum and Midwestern African Museum of Art. Additionally, known for sports and the history of the University of Nebraska football team, Lincoln is a draw for the state and a larger region of the Midwest during the team’s season. Along with the large university and the 22,000 college student population, the city maintains business advancement, quality education, and growth for up-and-coming entrepreneurs. Due to the affordable housing market, considerable low costs of living and low rate of unemployment, Lincoln is an attractive place to call home for families with children and young professionals. The city has a small town feel, embodies the values of Midwestern charm and has been considered by others as welcoming and diverse.
In 2016, the Lincoln area piloted a Mental Health Diversion program with the goal of keeping citizens with serious mental illness from re-entering or returning to court for nonviolent, misdemeanor crimes. Recently, lawmakers announced that the state is having hardship in providing mental health services after a program change a decade ago from state-run regional centers to locally run operations. This change did not allocate for additional funding for local programs and a “real deficiency” has occurred in mental health services after regional centers were closed as a cost savings measure. Due to this, public safety officials have few resources allocated to them to provide individuals that need mental health services. In 2017, the police department received 3,543 calls ranging from mental health investigations to suicide with a lack of resources to provide officers who address the calls. A recent community health report indicated that Lancaster County residents exhibited a higher rate of having a lifetime diagnosis of depression (19.5%) compared to the national rate (19.0%) and youth who attempted suicide increased from 9.6% to 14.0% in 2015.
