An Overview of Mental Health in Manteca, California

The vibrant city of Manteca is home to over 73,000 residents and some incredibly popular tourist attractions. Vacationers and locals alike enjoy the rich mixture of progressive technology and rural, agricultural history. Residents are aware, however, of the many mental health struggles. Here are some of the factors and situations that can lead to higher rates of mental illness, as well as excellent resources for anyone struggling with mental health issues.

Common Mental Health Struggles

Mental illness doesn’t just affect certain individuals or neighborhoods. Many issues are facing individuals around the country. In America, many individuals face the five most common mental illnesses:

  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Autistic spectrum disorders
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Alzheimer’s

These five are the most common struggles experienced by Americans, but there are many more ways that you could be struggling. Mental illnesses can manifest in different ways and at different stages of life. If you have any strong feelings that you suspect may be from a mental illness, a mental health professional can help you discuss your situation and find the best solution for your situation.

One in every five American adults experiences a mental illness. In California, the number of available psychiatric beds has been steadily decreasing since 1995. This accounts for the fact that over 25% of homeless American adults live with a serious mental illness. Poverty, addiction, and homelessness are all strongly connected with mental health issues. If you or a loved one is dealing with any of these environmental factors, don’t hesitate to contact a mental health professional.

Mental Health Statistics in Manteca, California

California, and Manteca in particular, deal with a few unique concerns that can make mental health issues more challenging to residents. Manteca has a homeownership rate of  68.3%. Because the national average is 63%, this means that more residents of Manteca are either renting or homeless.

In 2017, 18% of San Joaquin County adults reported drinking to excess. Particularly in adult males, drinking has been linked to greater rates of depression. Many adults choose to self-medicate with alcohol rather than seek the help they need. This could account for the fact that only 36% of adults dealing with mental illness in California sought professional treatment. Although California is the most populated state in the country, it ranks 23 out of all 50 states in terms of access to services for mental illness.

Thankfully, Manteca reports slightly higher average wages than the rest of the country. This means that, on average, fewer residents are experiencing financial obstacles to getting the treatment they need. Individuals with lower incomes typically experience higher rates of mental illness. However, Manteca is part of San Joaquin County, which found that 26% of county residents reported having mental health issues.

Another risk factor to consider is incarceration. Among the Californian prison population, 38% of female inmates and 23% of male inmates were treated for mental illnesses. Inmates deal with a wide variety of issues, so incarceration and mental health issues are typically correlated.

Divorce Rates in California

There is a correlation between divorce and mental illness. Not only are people who are struggling with a mental illness more likely to experience a divorce, but individuals who have experienced a divorce are more likely to develop mental health issues. Divorce affects families, friends, and communities as well. Anxiety, depression, and loneliness can all quickly overcome an individual facing a divorce. Or, if you or your spouse is experiencing a serious mental illness, it can often place tremendous stress on your marriage.

Thankfully, in California, the rate of divorce is decreasing. Since 2005, the rate has steadily dropped. Currently, the rate of divorce in California is between 42% and 45%. If you or a loved one are experiencing a divorce, don’t wait to contact a mental health professional. From marriage counselors to individual therapists, find the help you need.
