An Overview of Mental Health in Menifee, California

Stunning mountain views make Menifee, California, a beautiful and desirable place to call home. The 90,595 residents of this Southern California city have access to numerous local amenities including a library, waterpark, museum, and other attractions. Menifee is also located within proximity to some of the state’s largest metropolitan cities including Riverside, Los Angeles, and San Diego.

In comparison to other towns across the nation, the people of Menifee are relatively safe. The crime rate is lower than the state and national average. This is especially evident in terms of violent crimes, such as murder, rape, assault, and robbery. Per 100,000 citizens across the United States, 383 are impacted by reported violence. In California that number rises to 449, however, Menifee’s violent crime rate is 70 percent lower than the rest of the state at 136.

Spectacular views, engaging activities, and a sense of security all positively impact the mental health of the Menifee population. Still, according to the California Health Care Foundation, 15.4 percent of the state’s adults suffer from some form of mental illness. Psychological disorders are often rooted in genetics, yet can be buffered or exacerbated by environmental influences.

Climate in Menifee, California

One environmental aspect heavily dependent on the locale is climate. In Menifee, there are about 70 more sunny days per year than in the typical city. The average temperature ranges from 50 to 77 degrees year-round, making outdoor excursions the norm. Exposure to sunshine, fresh air, and exercise improves physical health and mood.

Unfortunately, there is a downside to the weather patterns of California. There are significantly more fires and earthquakes in this region of the United States, at times with devastating effects. Earthquake activity in and around Menifee is 703 percent greater than the national average. In 2018 alone, there were 876,124 acres of Californian land destroyed by flames. Bearing witness to or experiencing a traumatic event, such as a natural disaster, can trigger post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This experientially induced psychological disorder often necessitates therapeutic intervention.

Those in Riverside County also suffer from man-made impacts on the surrounding environment. The air quality and pollution indices in Menifee are significantly higher than in other areas across the nation. Air quality ranks in 70 percent worse than the national average, while pollution is a disconcerting 349 percent poorer. Due to this, those with respiratory conditions, allergies, or of advanced age may remain isolated indoors more often causing feelings of sadness or anxiety.

Menifee’s Household Composition

The majority of households in Menifee are occupied by families. Approximately half of all residents are married, similar to the national average. Although the overall divorce rate in the state of California is 6.9 percent, Menifee rates are slightly higher at 12.81 percent, which is also greater than the national rate of 10.92 percent. Divorce impacts not only the involved adults but also their children. As just about 36 percent of wedded unions in Menifee have kids living at home, there is a bigger need for marriage counseling when conflicts occur.

Mental Health Resources in Menifee, California

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately one in five adults suffer from mental illness in the United States. Sadly, the majority of people suffering from emotional distress do not receive professional help. Only 37 percent of California residents with psychological needs receive mental health support services, compared to 43.1 percent across the nation.

In Menifee, there are a multitude of counseling resources available. Local therapists specialize in treating relationship issues, family conflict, self-esteem, career difficulties, stress and anxiety, trauma and abuse, grief, depression, and countless other areas that impact quality of life. Counselors typically offer a variety of therapeutic options such as individual, couples, or group therapy based on your specific situation. When looking for support for yourself or a loved one, make sure you connect with a professional with expertise in your area of need.
