Overview of Mental Health Resources in Miami Gardens, Florida

Miami Gardens in Miami-Dade County, Florida is a principal city of the Miami metropolitan area.  It was last counted to have a population of 113,750 reported by the 2017 U.S. Census Bureau.  The city takes up 19.02 square miles .  The average household income is $47,679 and the poverty rate is almost 24%.  Miami Gardens’ economy is specialized in Transportation and Warehousing; Public Administration; and Administration, Support, and Waste Management Services.  The population of Miami Gardens, FL is almost 70% Black, 25% Hispanic, and a little less than 4% White.  Approximately 32% of the residents speak a non-English language and 87.1% are U.S. citizens.

City Concerns

It is reported by the Florida Council for Community Mental Health that Florida ranks 50th in the country for per-capita public mental health spending.  The state spends approximately $39 per resident, which is significantly behind the national average of $129 per capita.  This amount is less per person regarding mental health services than it was in the 1950’s in consideration of inflation.  For this reason, individuals suffering from mental health issues and their loved ones must often overcome difficult obstacles to get effective, proper treatment.  The report states that lack of treatment could lead to unnecessary disability, unemployment, substance abuse, homelessness, inappropriate incarceration, suicide, and difficult lives.  Florida has a slightly higher rate (13.84% per 100,000 of population) of suicide compared to the national average (12.93%).  For this reason, 24 of 32 law enforcement agencies in Miami-Dade County have implemented or are in the process of implementing Crisis Intervention Team programs.

A clinical professor at the University of Miami reports that the Miami area is supposed to be a very diverse community, but it is incredibly separated by ethnicity, nationality, and income.  Nathanial Sandler further states that there is a complex class hierarchy in Miami that behaves differently than other areas in the country.  Although the Caucasian demographic is the minority in the area, they have access to mental health resources more so than the other ethnicities.  It is speculated that the stigma in regards to receiving treatment is higher in the non-white ethnicities.

In 2015, the divorce rate in Florida was 8.4 percent compared to the country’s rate of 6.9 percent.  The rate of dissolutions in the same year was 4.0 percent for Florida and 3.1 for the U.S.

Community Health of South Florida provides outpatient services for children and adults.  They provide behavioral health care, substance abuse treatment, and medication management.  They offer a sliding scale for individuals who do not have insurance.

Mental Health Association of Dade County (MHA) provides quality mental health services to the diverse populations in Dade County’s multi-ethnic society.  Since 1947, they have been improving access to treatment and to the practice of mental health treatment, consumer rights, reducing stigma, preventing mental illness and promoting mental well-being. MHA provides innovative services such as Early Intervention/Prevention Programs for inner-city children ages 2-5 and their families.  They provide services for low cost or no fee.

South Florida Behavioral Health Network’s goal is to develop, implement, and refine a coordinated system of behavioral health care within the community that enhances prevention, treatment and recovery services for those at risk of or who are suffering from mental health and substance abuse problems.  They provide services for children and adults.

The Regis House Mental Health Services include treatment for behavioral problems, anger management, substance abuse, depression, bullying, individual therapy, family therapy, and group therapy.  The Family Support Program is a diversion program that works with adolescents between the ages of 14 and 17 who present problems that include, but are not limited to, drug use, legal involvement, and/or conduct problems. They also focus on those in need such as immigrants, children, and low income families.

The Miami Foundation provides a comprehensive outpatient program for severely emotionally disturbed children, adolescents and their families. Services provided include: individual, group and family counseling, school consultation, therapeutic recreational and cultural activities, psychological and psychiatric evaluations, drug prevention and substance abuse counseling.

Wellspring Counseling provides therapeutic services for Marriage & Family, Premarital, Parenting, Relationships, and Divorce.

We hope that you are able to find some relief in just knowing that support is available for you and your loved ones.  Taking the first step is a sign of strength.  We wish for you positive experiences and a peaceful well-being as you navigate this path for yourself.  We welcome you to find additional therapists in our directory for you area.
