An Overview of Mental Health in Minneapolis, Minnesota

The largest of the Twin Cities, Minneapolis has increased in popularity as a place to live, work and play.  The population has grown 7.4% since 2010 with over 422,000 residents calling the city home. Minneapolis was recently ranked as the 10th-best city for active lifestyles and ranked the second-best big city to start a career by Culpwrit. Fitness is a priority for the area as residents enjoy the many outdoor amenities from ice fishing on its many lakes and biking on dozens of trails. Known for the Mall of America, shopping is not the only thing that helps Minneapolis’ economy as the city has the tenth-highest group of Fortune 500 companies such as Best Buy and Target. Known for its combination of affordability along with a variety of job opportunities makes the city is very attractive to a range of ages.

Unfortunately for the area, the city’s mental health system is in crisis. Depression rates among women in the urban area are as high as 20 percent and a recent report indicated that there was a 34 percent increase in the hospital’s emergency department for mental illness in the Twin Cities. For families, approximately 20 percent of Minnesota families reported having a loved one with a mental health issue. Underfunded, hospital staff is challenged to meet the basic needs of patients in psychiatry units for patient beds. Recently, Minnesota is one of eight states to collaborate in a pilot program called Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic that will address co-occurring issues in people with significant mental health issues.

All mental health issues are complex and receiving adequate care for your health is important. As you begin your therapy journey, take time to review your symptoms as it will aid you in what practitioner decide to hire based on that person’s skill set. Whether you suffer from anxiety, depression, or any other disorder, our caring community of Minneapolis therapists can help you find a solution. Research our site and look at the practitioner’s bios and blogs to get a better understanding of how their skills can help you achieve a better life. While you navigate through our website, consider the following questions:

•    Why am I seeking help?
•    What are my goals in therapy?
•    Am I more comfortable with a man or a woman?
•    Are there any personal aspects I’m not willing to discuss?
•    Do I want to be able to lead the discussion, or have it led?
•    How long do I plan to attend therapy?
•    Does my problem need extra specialization?

Many mental health issues can affect you, how you think and feel daily and you need to decide in advance on the frequency of your visits. To maintain your treatment, check to see how far it is for you to travel to your appointments. Most offices are open only during the workday. If your therapy appointments need to take place outside the typical 9-5 work hours, add that to your list of interview questions. During your research period, it is also important to take time to set up a phone interview with your potential therapist. This step allows you to see if they are empathetic to your needs if you like their style and feel important to spend time with this person to tell them your thoughts and personal stories. The session might feel like an official interview and for others, it might be a simple conversation.

Once you have created your list of practitioners that meet your needs, locations, and schedule, your final step is to officially schedule your first appointment with that therapist. For your session, dress comfortably and bring water as you might talk for a while about what is troubling you. Having a prepared list of goals to provide your therapist will provide direction on how your sessions should go over the next few weeks or months. The process to achieve mental health wellness may take some time and expect that in your first session, you will not have enough time to discuss your issues and have a solution by the end of the hour. Mental health issues took a while to develop so plan to invest some time in yourself as you work on a road map to a better life.

Your journey to wellness is unique and every mental health issue is complex. Our professionals want to empower you to have a better life as your licensed professional to guide you through the barriers and opportunities during your treatment.
