Overview of Mental Health Resources in Murrieta, California

Murrieta is one of the fastest growing cities in California. It has more than doubled since 2010. It is located in Riverside County and is considered a commuter town. Most people who live in Murrieta actually work in Los Angeles, San Diego and Orange County.

The median household income in Murrieta is just $76,000 but this number is increasing.  and the average property value is extremely high at almost $340,000. Unlike a lot of other cities in the country, Murrieta is increasing both in size and in economic stability.

The city has named itself the “Gem of the Valley” because of its desirable located and proximity to so many large cities. Its residents live in a nice quiet residential area but are close enough to enjoy the luxuries and excitement the cities have to offer.

Mental Health Statistics for Murrieta

In 2015, Riverside County decided to take a survey to see what issues most concerned its residents. Mental health was at the top of the list. People were concerned that there were not enough mental health resources. They also felt that they needed more information on what services were available to them.

The people of Riverside County have to rely on urgent care to handle a lot of their mental health issues. This is not ideal. People at urgent care centers do not specialize in mental health treatment.

The biggest problem in Murrieta has to do with the suicide rate. The rate continues to go up every year and has one of the highest suicide rates in California. The goal is to get the suicide rate down to about 10% by 2020.

Impact of Not Receiving Treatment in Murrieta, California

There seems to be enough mental health professionals available in Murrieta. Although there are fewer here than in other areas of California, there are almost 160 mental health providers for every 100,000 people in the city. The problem is, the providers are either booked or do not provide sufficient information regarding mental health treatment.

A lack of mental health resources can lead to:

  • Suicide
  • Divorce
  • Criminal activity
  • Homelessness
  • Unemployment
  • Worsened mental health issues
  • Substance abuse

If people had easy, user-friendly access to mental health information, they would not end up in urgent care for a mental health illness. People need to be able to get treatment from specialists. They deserve access to this information.

What Makes Murriea Unique When It Comes to Mental Health?

Murrieta declares itself one of the nicest places to live in California. The weather is great and the location is ideal. However, things aren’t perfect in Murrieta. The suicide rate wouldn’t be as high as it is if things were perfect.

  • Climate: Murrieta has some of the most ideal weather in the country. It is located right outside Los Angeles and they enjoy plenty of sunny days.
  • Economic: The median household income is $76,000 and the poverty level is average at about 9%.
  • Culture: Murrieta is a commuter town. People love to live there but they have to commute long distances in traffic back and forth to the major cities nearby.

Divorce Rate in Murrieta

The divorce rate in Murrieta is rather low at just 8.6%. Although, since 30% of the people there have never been married, it could be a matter of fear of marriage more than anything else. If the marriage rate was higher, sadly, we could expect the divorce rate to be higher as well.

Mental Health Resources in Murrieta

There is an ample amount of mental health professionals in Murrieta. There are over 160 mental health professionals in the city. However, because most providers are private psychiatrists, people don’t have access to treatment. They rely on urgent care to handle their mental health issues.
