Overview of Mental Health Resources in North Las Vegas, Nevada

North Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada is the fourth largest city in the state. It is located in the Mojave Desert, therefore, having a desert climate. It surrounds the north and east of Las Vegas, taking up a total area of 101.4 square miles (262.6 km2). The U.S. Census reports that it had a population of 216,961 in 2010 and an estimated population of 249,180 in 2017. The median income for a household was $46,057 reported by the 2010 Census. Bigelow Aerospace is one of the city’s main employers, followed by manufacturing, industrial, and warehouse industries. High-technology businesses are moving into the area more recently and Amazon plans to have a new center there.

City Concerns

One in five people in Nevada is afflicted with mental illness. Suicide has gone up by 30% since 1999 in the state and it has the fifth-highest rate of suicide in the country. The number one reason for children to be admitted to the hospital is for depression or bipolar disorder. From 2008 to 2013, the legislature cut $60 million in mental health program funding. Patients were bussed to other communities. The cities continued to grow, but providers could not keep up with the numbers. The shooting that occurred in Las Vegas in 2017 that left 59 dead, and over 500 wounded, and directly affected 22,000 attendees, continues to impact the surrounding Nevadan communities mentally and emotionally. One month after the occurrence, the number of mental health symptoms in people increased exponentially.

Bullying and cyberbullying continue to be a problem in North Las Vegas schools and have increased over the past few years. In the state of Nevada, there are suicide attempts every school day. Increased funding for programs was distributed and the schools are hoping to make a difference through education and awareness. They began the Safe2Tell program for reports of bullying, threats, and self-harm, so they can follow up with a plan. Safe2Tell experienced a 157% increase in the number of reports for February 2018.

The divorce rate in Nevada was 4.3% in 2016 compared to the U.S. rate of 6.9% in the same year, according to the National Vital Statistic Report.

Nevada now has 190 licensed psychiatrists — up 21 from 2008. The state has 390 psychologists — up 79 from 2008. However, the need for mental health services still outweighs the available services. The state voluntarily chose to expand Medicaid beyond the elderly and those under the poverty line, which helps more people receive treatment. The city of North Las Vegas has approximately 45 therapists, psychologists, and licensed social workers. There are approximately 13 treatment centers. There are an estimated 20 psychiatrists in North Las Vegas.

Crisis Intervention

Children’s Mobile Response Team provides telephone support to North Nevada families during a behavioral or mental health crisis. They also provide mobile support by coming to you in a time of need. There is a follow-up program included. For ages 18 and younger.

The Suicide Hotline offers support and services for those in emotional distress or suicidal crisis.

Nonprofit Organizations

North Las Vegas Behavioral Health offers outpatient therapy for mental health or substance abuse issues. Biofeedback Technology is available. Transportation is offered for those who need it in the Greater Las Vegas area. It specializes in mental and behavioral health services and substance abuse therapy for children, adolescents, adults, and families. They specialize in Trauma Psychotherapy and provide School-Based Services for those experiencing bullying, suicide ideation, parent/child conflict, and /or any other stressors at school. Medicaid is accepted and there are sliding scale / no fee plans.

Westcare Nevada provides outpatient, residential, and intervention services for adults, families, Veterans, and the LGBT+ community.

Nevada Health Centers offers services for a large variety of mental health symptoms and behavioral issues. They offer a sliding scale.

Diversified Community Services provides individual, group, and family counseling, and case management.

Getting Help

It can be frustrating when you are ready for help and do not know where to start. Referrals from family and friends sometimes help, but everyone has different needs when it comes to mental and emotional concerns.
