With several streams around the village and a setting in a wooded marshland, the shape of the city resembles an axe. Tourists visit the area to see Arlington Park, the Deer Grove Forest Preserve, and Arlington International Racecourse.

As of 2016, 68,725 people lived in Palatine, Illinois and the median household income was $80,521, which is significantly higher than the state’s median of $60,960. The city’s population is made up of almost 65 whites, 19% Hispanic, 13% Asian, and 3% black. Just over 17,000 residents are foreign-born, including 6.3% in Asia, 6.6% in Europe, and 8.5% in Latin America.

The crime index in the city is considerably lower than the country’s average (280.5) at 61.2. Palatine is a safe, profitable place to live, but it is also not immune to the tragedies and issues that surround mental illness and the shortage of treatment options throughout the country.

The unemployment rate in Palatine is low at 3.7%, while the state of Illinois hovers just over 5% generally. The most popular industries in the city are manufacturing, retail trade, warehousing and transportation, construction, professional, technical, and scientific services, finance and insurance, and accommodation and food services.

Cook County has more natural disasters than the national average at 19, with 15 declared presidential emergencies. These include but are not limited to floods, storms, snowstorms, tornadoes, blizzards, and hurricanes.
