Overview of Mental Health Resources in Peoria, Arizona

Located in both Maricopa and Yavapai Counties, Peoria, Arizona is considered a major suburb of Phoenix. With a population of nearly 198,000, the area is the sixth largest city in Arizona by land and the ninth due to the population. Money Magazine recently ranked the area as the 29th top city to live in the United States. Peoria boasts nearly 300 days of ample sunshine for this growing city in the Grand Canyon State. Popularity is due to a high 94% graduation rate, paired with modest home prices and an 8.15% positive forecasted job growth. A sports city with the NBA, MLB, NFL, NHS and NASCAR, Peoria is only minutes away for each of these events. Spring training is a popular time for the city as the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners play at the Peoria Sports Complex each year. Additionally, the city entertains such as the Peoria 83 (P83) Entertainment District, the historical area of Old Town, 25 miles of trails, and over 33 community parks attract visitors and locals alike for food, culture, and arts.

There are a few issues that the residents of Peoria are faced with such as suicide and divorce. Arizona is a state that will consider a no-fault divorce. When this occurs, neither spouse has to provide a reason for the divorce but does need to declare that their marriage is broken. Due to this type of law, the state was recently ranked the 13th-highest rate of divorce in the country. Maricopa County, where Peoria resides, currently has the number one spot amongst the other Arizona counties for divorce with over 9,000 divorces reported yearly.

Mental health is an additional concern as research indicates that of students 14 years or older, an estimated 50% will drop out of high school due to a mental illness. Currently, Arizona’s student-to-school counselor ratio is considered one of the highest in the nation – an estimated 903 students per counselor. Anxiety and stress over recent nationwide school shootings have caused angst and school walkouts during the school year. As youth suicides increase in the area, the school systems have established new suicide alertness training within the public school system.

Whether it is you or someone you know who suffers from suicidal thoughts or trying to end an addiction, understand that you are not alone. Research indicates that one-third of adult health issues nationwide are due to mental health. The first step in finding personal peace is recognizing that you need help. It is a concern to take seriously when you notice symptoms and ongoing signs that prohibit your ability to function within society, cause frequent stress and do not allow you to enjoy life. We are here to help as our community of Peoria medical professionals can uncover your strengths and utilize your inner skill set to solve your problems. Take a moment to determine the symptoms that affect your well-being as it will help you narrow down which therapist can help you properly. You will need to review potential therapist’s profiles and blogs to ensure that their specialties can meet your needs. When researching your potential therapist, consider the following questions:

  • Why am I seeking help?
  • What are my goals in therapy?
  • Am I more comfortable with a man or a woman?
  • Are there any personal aspects I’m not willing to discuss?
  • Do I want to be able to lead the discussion, or have it led?
  • How long do I plan to attend therapy?
  • Does my problem need extra specialization?

Engaging in effective treatments from one of our licensed therapists will help you on the path to living a successful and productive life. Many mental health issues can affect you, and how you think and feel daily. Decide how often you need to visit your therapist and make sure that their office is located near where you work or live. Typically, offices are only open during the work day so if your appointment needs are outside that time frame; add that to your list of interview questions. These sessions will help you build a relationship so take time to set up a phone interview with them. It is important that you feel a connection with your potential therapist, learn their style, and if they seem engaged in the conversation.
