Located in Broward County with a warm, subtropical climate, Plantation, Florida is a welcoming community that is home to 90,000 residents. With a growing population and a vibrant community of universities, hospitals and small businesses, Plantation is a great city to call home. Whether you live in Plantation or nearby Fort Lauderdale, there are many amenities available to residents and travelers. However, there are also challenges facing this community. If you’re a resident of Plantation and dealing with a mental health crisis, you’re not alone. Discover how many individuals in your community are dealing with mental illness, and learn how you can contact a experienced therapist today. Whether you’re looking for help for you or a loved one, there’s plenty of resources available in your community.

Mental Illness Statistics in Plantation, Florida

Statewide, the second most frequent hospitalization reason was psychosis in 2013. Unfortunately, the state also spends the second lowest amount on mental health resources, just $37 per person in 2012. A large crisis and small funding pool can cause many individuals to experience mental health issues without any support.

There are approximately 660,00 adults in Florida who live with a serious mental illness, and it’s estimated half the population will experience a form of mental illness at one point in their life. Mental illness can take many forms, and some of the most common forms of mental illness include:

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Schizophrenia
  • Social Anxiety Disorder
  • Depressive Disorder
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder

If you or a loved one is experiencing any signs or symptoms of mental illness, such as feelings of hopelessness, distancing from favorite activities or unusual anger or sadness, consider contacting a therapist in your area. There are many signs of mental illness, so it can be difficult to determine the cause or solution on your own.

Another strong indicator of potential mental illness is excessive alcohol or drug use. In Florida, there were 14.4 deaths per 100,000 people in 2016 from opioid overdose. The excessive drinking rate in Broward County was 17.2 percent in 2017. Opioid overdose and excessive drinking can be directly linked with depression. These issues can be linked in two ways. First, many individuals who are experiencing depression often drink to excess. Other individuals who begin excessively drinking or abusing drugs can quickly become depressed, anxious or have other symptoms of mental illness.

If you know an individual who is experiencing homelessness, watch for any signs of mental illness. While Plantation has average household incomes higher than the national average, property values are also higher. This could lead to more instances of homelessness. On a national level, 30 percent of individuals who are homeless suffer from a serious mental illness. Finding treatment can be especially difficult for individuals who are also facing a variety of environmental and financial obstacles.

Divorce Rates in Florida

With the seventh highest divorce rate nationally, Florida experiences a large percentage of divorces every year. Divorce can either be a sign of large amounts of stress and anxiety, or cause these symptoms to manifest. Divorce doesn’t just affect the couple, but also friends and family members. The stress of a divorce can add an additional burden to an individual with a mental illness, or it can cause an individual’s emotions to spiral out of control and lead to a depressive episode or panic attack.

15 percent of the population of Plantation is divorced. While not all individuals who experience a mental health issue experience a divorce, mental illness can cause a great amount of stress in a marriage. If you’re concerned about your marriage, or the marriage of friends or family members, due to high levels of stress or depression, consider contacting a therapist or marriage counselor in your area.
