Overview of Mental Health in Rockford, Illinois

Located in Winnebago County, Rockford, IL is the third largest city in the state and the largest outside of the Chicago Metropolitan area. With a population of nearly 148,000, the residents have access to an outstanding park system, Illinois’ largest water park, museums, and theater among many other attractions in the city. The largest employers in the area include Fiat’s Belvidere Assembly Plant, Rockford Public School District, Mercy Health, and Swedish American Health System.

However, Rockford faces a multitude of issues as it was recently ranked again as the 16th among the 50 worst cities to live in the United States by 24/7 Wall Street. This is due to Rockford’s unemployment rate which is the highest in the state at 7.7% compared to the 4.9% national jobless rate. The city has “more than four times” the violent crime rate of 1,658 incidents per 100,000 residents. Recently, CBS News ranked the city among the Most Dangerous Cities in America due to its crime rate. Due to a weak job market and high crime, Rockford is faced with struggling home values as a typical home in the area is worth half of the state’s median home value. All of these factors create a toxic environment for the city.

For the Rockford area, residents continued to combat the stigmatism associated with mental health. Half of those in the area are expected to meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition sometime within their life and one in five are projected to have a diagnosis of a mental health condition within the year. Suicide is the leading cause of death for children 10-14 years old, and 90% of those who died by suicide had an underlying mental illness. More than 80% of the youth in Rockford with a diagnosed mental health issue do not receive the necessary treatment required.

With increased crime and a struggling job market in your area, you may struggle with feelings that seem out of your control. Or you may have experienced a traumatic event that affects your daily life. You could also consistently feel anxious, sad or even guilty during the day. There might even be times that you feel that you are capable of becoming so much more but can’t seem to navigate that correct path toward success. If these thoughts sound familiar, we are here to help by offering the area’s most premier counseling and therapy services. Regardless of your age or race, one in two people will experience mental illness in their lifetime.  Many mental health issues can affect you, how you think and feel on a daily basis. Whether it is you or someone you know that is afflicted with suicidal thoughts or trying to end an addiction, understands that you are not alone.

Let us take care of you. The first step in finding inner peace is recognizing that you need help. We are here as our community of Rockford medical professionals can help you discover your strengths and utilize your inner skill set to solve your problems.  Take a moment to determine the symptoms that affect your well-being as it will help you narrow down which therapist can help you properly. You will need to review potential therapist’s profiles and blogs to ensure that their specialties can meet your needs. While conducting your research, consider the following questions:

  • Why am I seeking help?
  • What are my goals in therapy?
  • Am I more comfortable with a man or a woman?
  • Are there any personal aspects I’m not willing to discuss?
  • Do I want to be able to lead the discussion, or have it led?
  • How long do I plan to attend therapy?
  • Does my problem need extra specialization?
