An Overview of Mental Health in Sarasota, Florida

Tucked into the southwestern coast, Sarasota, Florida, rests on the bay near the Gulf of Mexico. According to the United States Census Bureau, approximately 56,944 people reside in this seaside town year-round. Aside from warm temperatures and ocean breezes, inhabitants enjoy a wide variety of amenities. Nearby shopping, aquariums and museums, state parks and public beaches are just a few of the local pastimes.

Although sunshine and outdoor activities are positive influences on emotional well-being, it is not always enough. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that 18.3 percent of adults across the nation suffer from some form of mental illness. For the state of Florida, Mental Health America reports a 17.3 percent rate of adults with mental health concerns.

Psychological well-being is commonly understood as a combination of nature and nurture. Nature refers to biological, intrinsic elements present at birth. Nurture is the external, environmental influences that impact a person’s state of mind. In Sarasota, some extrinsic factors include victimization, relationship difficulties and money troubles. Fortunately, regardless of the source, professional counseling aids Sarasota residents in coping with difficulties and improving emotional health.

Crime Rates in Sarasota, Florida

Throughout the US, there are roughly 2,745 crimes committed annually per 100,000 people. Sarasota’s rate is 45 percent higher than the national average, with about 3,986 offenses per 100,000 people every year. Both property and violent wrongdoings occur at a much higher rate. Falling victim to a property crime, such as burglary or theft, may threaten one’s personal sense of security leading to increased anxiety and worry. Violent crimes, however, oftentimes have a life-altering impact. There are 323 reported violent crimes per year in Sarasota, including rape, robbery, assault and murder. For these 323 victims and their families, there is subsequent grief, trauma, guilt and despair. When violated in this way, therapeutic services help people develop positive coping mechanisms and move forward with recovery.

Marriage and Divorce Statistics in Sarasota

The companionship of marriage has positive effects on emotional well-being. However, the opposite holds true as well in that divorce is a top life stressor. In Sarasota, approximately 40.5 percent of the inhabitants are married and 31.3 percent have never been wed. This leaves a staggering 28.2 percent of the local population divorced, separated or widowed. On average in the state of Florida, about 10.7 percent of people are divorced. In Sarasota, this number rises to 17.2 percent. These statistics speak to the importance of marriage counseling for struggling couples. After a divorce, separation or death of a spouse, therapy helps people adjust and learn how to find joy in their new life circumstance.

Cost of Living and Poverty in Sarasota

According to the US census report, the national median household income is $57,652. In comparison, the median income per household in Sarasota is $45,073. These numbers are particularly concerning for Sarasota residents because the local Cost of Living Index of 108 is higher than the national index of 100. This means that the price of goods, services, groceries, utilities, health care and housing is slightly more than average. However, with a less than average income residents must find a way to make their dollar stretch further. Living paycheck to paycheck or not having enough money to pay the bills can be extremely stressful.

Some residents have more severe financial difficulties. In Sarasota, 19.6 percent of the population live at or below the poverty level, higher than the national average rate of 14 percent. In this instance, worries may be related to putting food on the table or finding an affordable place to live. It is normal to experience sadness, anxiety or feelings of inadequacy in this situation.

The Challenge of Finding a Therapist in Sarasota, Florida

There are many reasons why 56.4 percent of US residents with mental health concerns do not access support. In Sarasota, Florida, approximately 25 percent of people under the age of 65 are without health insurance. Finances are a significant barrier to seeking help, therefore some therapists offer services on a reduced fee or sliding scale basis. Another common barrier is feeling overwhelmed or confused as to how to begin the therapeutic journey.
