Mental Health in Schaumburg, Illinois

Schaumburg, Illinois, not Schaumberg as it is commonly misspelled, is a large, bustling suburban metropolis area located in Cook County only 30 miles away from Chicago. Although a rural area until the 1950s, the city’s 74,184 residents now benefit from a large number of industries, shopping areas, restaurants, and recreational activities. The Motorola headquarters, IKEA, a unique dinner theater called Medieval Times, and Woodfield Mall are a few highlights of this town.

In some ways, Schaumburg is thriving. For example, the city has a median household income of $77,022 and a low poverty rate of 6.7%. However, citizens of Schaumburg are faced with other serious issues that can seriously affect their mental health and overall well-being:

  • High Crime Rates: Schaumburg is located in the same county as Chicago, a city known for its high crime rates and homicides. On its own, Schaumburg is still not the safest place to live with a crime rate of 24 crimes per 1,000 people. The city’s crime rate is higher than 81% of cities in Illinois. In 2016 the city made the list of the state’s top 100 least safe cities.
  • Lack of Mental Health Providers: Residents of Schaumburg and other cities in Cook County struggle to access treatment for their mental health illnesses since there are only 203 mental health professionals per every 100,000 people. At least six mental health clinics have recently closed in the county. In the state as a whole, 5% of adults with a mental illness and 59.4% of youths with major depression did not receive treatment in the last year.
  • Incarceration of the Mentally Ill: Considered the largest mental health facility in the United States, Cook County Jail reports that a third of its inmates have a mental illness. To adequately care for the mentally ill within the jail, staff members have to receive 60 hours of advanced mental illness treatment training. This issue is seen across the entire nation with an estimated 25 to 40% of mentally ill individuals being incarcerated at some point.
  • Homelessness: Although mostly a suburban area, Schaumburg still struggles with homelessness. In 2009, the Alliance to End Homelessness conducted a count of how many homeless were living in the suburban area of Cook County and found a total of 1,190. Since suburbs lack many of the resources largely urban areas have like buses, shelters, and centers within walking distance, it can be difficult for homeless individuals to find help.
  • Substance Abuse: NAMI Chicago released a report discussing substance abuse and mental health issues in Illinois and how to best address them. The report indicates that deaths due to opioid overdose increased by 82% from 2013 to 2016. Additionally, the suicide rate has increased by 23% between 1999 and 2016. If prevention and treatment are not prioritized by the community, these numbers are expected to continue rising.

Divorce Rates in Schaumburg, Illinois

It is no secret that divorce is common among Americans. Although the exact numbers are difficult to calculate, estimates reveal that around half of marriages end in divorce. Couples who are currently struggling with their marriage and individuals who have recently gone through a divorce may find counseling to be very beneficial. In Schaumburg, about half of all people are currently married and 9.6% of the population is divorced. The divorce rate for women is 12%, almost double the rate for men at 6.9%. When looking at the marital status of individual races within Schaumburg, the highest divorce rate is found among Hispanics at 12.8%. This is close to the Hispanic poverty rate of 11.03%, the highest poverty percentage of any single race in the city.
