An Overview of Mental Health in Warren Michigan

Looking for a mental health professional can seem like a daunting task, no matter where you live. However, despite the unique challenges of a region such as Warren, Michigan, there are experienced professionals available there who can offer you the quality mental health care you deserve.

While Detroit’s largest suburb is home to such auto and manufacturing luminaries as General Motors, TACOM, and Fiat Chrysler, it also has its share of recreation and culture. This includes a city recreation department that supports a system of 24 parks, an Italian American Community Center, a state-of-the-art shopping mall, and a full symphony orchestra that offers a variety of concerts each season.

Mental Health Statistics for Warren Michigan

For those 12 and older living in the greater Detroit area, 10.1% are classified as having a substance abuse disorder, which is higher than the national average of 9%. Unfortunately, this goes along with the statistic of 66% of those with substance abuse problems also exhibiting psychological illness.

6.9% of those 18 years or older also experienced a major depressive episode in the past year and Michigan’s state rankings for the adult prevalence of mental illness held at 24th overall nationally for 2017.

In 2016, the rate of suicide deaths in Michigan was slightly lower than the national average of 13.9% at 13.7%, and while access to care for the state of Michigan came in at 18th overall in 2014, the percentage of those who received assertive community treatment for evidence-based mental illness was 2.99% in 2014. This is lower than the state total of 3.17%, and far lower than the national average of 41% of Americans who received mental health care for their conditions.

Warren’s Unique Mental Health Concerns

When it comes to causes of mental illness in Warren, some weather, crime, and social economic status factors are unique to the region which likely has an effect:

  • With its cold, dry winters and near year-round overcast skies, the weather in Warren can add to the prevalence of depression in the region. This may be in connection with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which studies show is a real factor for those living in gloomy weather conditions.
  • Crime in the city was also at 7% as of 2016, which is 40.2% above the national average. This also has an effect on mental health in the region.
  • Median household income came in at $46,249 for 2016, which is below the Michigan State average of $52,492 for the same year. Unemployment rates for the city were also significantly higher in 2015 at 6.5% than the state average of 4.7%. Combined, these factors can have a strong influence on the mental stability of the region.

Divorce Rates

Another factor that affects mental health is the divorce rate, which is significantly higher in Warren than the national average (3.2% US average vs 10.6% average in Warren). This may be due to a variety of reasons, such as the working-class nature of the region necessitating dual-working relationships, which studies show reduces relationship time for both parties.

Another reason for the elevated divorce rate in Warren may be the low location quotient of marriage counselors, which is 0.14. This is on the lowest end of the scale when compared to other regions, where the quotient can be as high as 2.50.
