Mental Health Resources in Winston-Salem, North Carolina

Winston-Salem is the 5th most populous city in North Carolina with a recorded population of 245,549 as of 2018. The county seat of Forsythe County, Winston-Salem has most significantly played a role in the U.S. textiles and tobacco industries. While those industries still exist, they are not as large as they once used to be, and this has caused an upheaval in the identity of the city. Winston-Salem has increasingly become one of the leading areas in the country for nanotechnology, biotechnology, and other scientific industries.

The city is also changing in other ways as well. An ongoing problem the Winston-Salem area continues to deal with is the effects of substance abuse. Between 2005 and 2015 Forsyth County experienced one of the largest increases in opioid-related deaths among other comparable urban areas in the country. Substance abuse can often go together with mental health troubles- with people self-medicating rather than seeking alternative therapies.  This has been a significant enough issue that the community has identified mental health as one of the priority health issues to be addressed in their public health initiative. Vast improvements need to be made to the mental health services available for residents of the Winston-Salem area.

If you identify as suffering from some form of debilitating stress or depression, or even if you feel something is not quite right, it may be time to seek the assistance of a mental health professional or therapist. We can help you connect with the appropriate service depending on what your needs are.

Realizing that you need support is not always easy to admit, but when you are at the stage where you need a helping hand, we want to be able to make your search as simple as possible. It can be overwhelming to know where to start, but if you take a minute to decide what type of program or professional might help you most, you’ll be more likely to find an effective plan.

Starting Your Search for a Mental Health Professional

Asking yourself some initial questions may make your search for a mental health professional easier. If you take the time to think about your own needs and preferences, you are more likely to connect with someone who can best understand you. It will then be easier to review the differences between service providers. Here are a few questions that you should with:

  • What type of symptoms and emotions are you experiencing?
  • What do you want to gain from going to therapy or working with a mental health professional?
  • Are you more comfortable speaking with a male or a female about your issues?
  • What time and monetary resources do you have to devote to the process?
  • Would you be better served by working with a professional who specializes in the behaviors you want to address? (For example, someone who has extensive professional experience in working with overeaters, etc.)

This list of questions is by no means complete, but it is a good place to start. By honestly answering them you’ll have a better idea of what your own needs are, and you can target mental health professionals that fit the criteria. Therapy is not a once-size-fits-all endeavor, it works best with highly tailored to your individual needs.

Talking to Your Health Insurance Provider

As you begin your search for a therapist you should also talk to your health insurance provider and find out if and what they cover in terms of mental health services. You may find that your insurance company requires you to work with certain professionals in their network. This could be a big consideration for you as it could help alleviate the out-of-pocket costs associated with treatment.
